Technically, I did not take a class with Scott Barrow (Tectonic Theater Project company member) on Tectonic’s Moment Work. But, I did learn this amazing technique from Scott during our Stages on the Sound teacher curriculum meetings and during the process of devising Gold Coast for Metropolitan Playhouse’s Gilded Stage Festival.
They say you learn while you teach, and I certainly did as I taught the basics of this technique to 4th, 6th, and 8th graders as a teaching artist with Stages on the Sound. Going through the process from beginning to production on Gold Coast was exhilarating. It’s a process that I know I will use in the future as an actor, writer, and/or director whenever applicable. Even in the most simple use of the technique, I know I can discover unique ways to create a moment in a scene–to avoid cliches and to find truly thrilling, theatrical ideas.
