I acknowledge and respect that I live and create my art on the island of Manahatta in Lenapehoking the homeland of the Lenape, an offspring of the Algonquin civilization and specifically the clan of the Minsi (or Munsee) on what is now called Manhattan in New York, NY. The Lenape were forced off of their land that they had agreed to share with the Dutch, but is wrongfully portrayed as the “sale of Manhattan”. The wall of Wall Street was built to keep the Lenape out of their land. The Lenape trade route known as Wickquasgeck became Brede weg and eventually Broadway. The Lenape people shaped New York City, but their culture is erased. A promised national monument was never built. The two memorials in the city are full of historical inaccuracies. We must advocate and work for accountability and justice for the Lenape and for all indigenous people.
